Purchase adds new dimension to Stone State Park
SIOUX CITY - Siouxland nature lovers got a 70-acre Christmas present this year courtesy of a public/private partnership that added a new tract to Stone State Park in Sioux City.
The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation recently announced it helped facilitate the purchase of the grassland from owners Peggy and Larry Chytka and Nancy and Lawrence Stanek to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Officials say the land is located in the 3200 block of Malloy Road in the southeast corner of the park. The 70-acre addition is the latest in a major growth period of Stone State Park, which now encompasses 1,543 acres.
Park Ranger Kevin Pape said the new land, formerly a pasture, will provide habitat for nesting birds and other animals that need grassland habitat, something that the forested and rugged park doesn't have in abundance.
"Most of Stone Park is wooded with little remnants of grasslands," Pape said.
Tim Sproul, of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, said the new land will benefit species such as meadowlarks and dickcissels.
