Clover Tree helps provide for children at Christmas
Seven-year-old Chloe wears shoes size 2 and wishes for a play cook set for Christmas.
Hers is one of 50 names on the 4-H Clover Tree that provides holiday gifts for Sumner children who otherwise may find little or nothing under the Christmas tree. And with the donations deadline three days away, 12 children are still without presents.
“This year has been the toughest,” said Clint Parker, agent with the University of Tennessee’s Sumner County Extension Office in Gallatin. “Usually by his time, we have one or two clovers left, but this is the largest number we’ve had left by this time in 12 years, which shows how great the need is. With the economy lots of folks are watching their money a lot closer.”
Children want to help peersTwelve years ago, middle and high school students of the extension’s 4-H club started the Clover Tree project as a way to help families in need. Each December, they set up a Christmas tree that among its ornaments also displays paper clover leaves. Written on each leaf is a child’s first name, age, clothing sizes and a list of several Christmas wishes.
