Sen. Donald McEachin's Dec. 9 column unfortunately conveyed the erroneous impression that neither the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency nor the nation's utilities have taken effective steps to control mercury. The record, both nationally and here in Virginia, points to a sharply different conclusion. Acting upon rules that the EPA has already issued, utilities have made major environmental improvements that have significantly reduced mercury emissions.
The EPA has taken many forceful steps to improve air quality since Congress tightened the Clean Air Act more than 20 years ago. Utilities have responded by installing sophisticated anti-pollution equipment and switching to fuels with lower emissions. The result? Dramatic reductions in mercury discharges.
According to the EPA, mercury releases from power plants have dropped by 45 percent since 2000.
The downward trend is even stronger here in the commonwealth. Since 1998, mercury releases from Dominion Virginia Power's electric generating stations have decreased by more than 60 percent. By 2015, the emissions into the atmosphere will have been reduced by approximately 87 percent, even as demand for electricity has risen.
