FARMERS in Cumbria and the Dales are being urged to plant a specialist range of flowers which could accelerate the recovery of declining farmland birds and bees.
A study by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) and Conservation Grade has found special flowers called legumes, including clover and flowers from the pea family, can boost the survival of starving chicks.
Just 10 per cent of wild flowers investigated - alsike clover, red clover, bird’s foot trefoil, sainfoin, yellow trefoil and lucerne, which are all legumes, and the oxeye daisy, knapweed, creeping buttercup and meadow buttercup - provide 90 per cent of the food for insects, which in turn feed young birds.
Dr John Holland, head of farmland ecology at GWCT, said: “I would urge farmers in Cumbria and the Dales to consider planting these species. There is a weight of evidence that clearly demonstrates the superiority of flower-rich field margins to provide food for invertebrates and birds. We need to persuade farmers to replace or supplement the unproductive grass margins with those containing flowers.”
