The lush greens and brilliant colors of summer give way to the browns of fall long before most gardeners are ready to concede to the elements.
So for an eye-catching transition that spares lawns from being seasonally monochromatic, there's no more popular flower than the chrysanthemum.
"They're wonderful," said Ella Maxwell, a horticulturist for Hoerr Nursery in Peoria. "They're beautiful. They are fall."
Mums aren't the only fall-flowering perennial, but they're definitely the go-to flower of choice for autumn color.
"They're so popular because they have a broad color range, and they have the fall colors of orange, yellow and red," Maxwell said.
Best of all, there's no end to the number of looks a yard can achieve using different varieties of the chrysanthemum, according to Elona Mason, a horticulturist for Luthy Botanical Garden.
"They're so different. Some are like pompons," Mason said. "Some are flat. And some are like a spider, like quills. There are all different kinds and they're all different."
