The chilly winter night is no deterrent for the hundreds of farmers who bring their delicate, multi-hued harvest with great care. The by-lanes around K.R. Market, a historic structure in the old area of Bangalore, springs to life as early as 3 a.m. with florists from across the city descending here to buy farm-fresh flowers that arrive from nearby villages as well as from faraway Dharmapuri and Salem in Tamil Nadu. It's a fascinating marketplace for a few hours where modernity meets tradition. One can buy both cut flowers that brighten up a modest room or a swish lobby as well as flowers by the kilo for traditional purposes.
In Srinagar, the severe cold has had no adverse effect on the flowers business on the streets. Footpaths in Srinagar's main city centre — Lal Chowk — are dotted with vendors who are selling seedlings of all sorts of flowers. Even the ongoing turmoil has not put the brakes on this business.
