Although most of our experiences with grasses deal with the species that make up our lawns and we have to mow periodically, other types of grasses are also important in our daily lives.
Much of our food comes from grasses. We're all familiar with wheat and oats, plants that look more like what we think a grass should look like, but corn is also a member of the grass family.
Grasses are also important in the landscape, as there are many ornamental types that have fairly widely ranging characteristics. They can be used as focal points to add interest, and many have the height and width to act as screens.
While grasses are members of the flowering plants, the flowers lack the complexity and usually the color of what we traditionally think of as a blossom. They make up the seed heads or plumes that tower above the foliage.
Like most grasses, the ornamental varieties usually prefer a sunny location with a well-drained soil. They won't do well in an area where the soil is very acidic, preferring a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
