Mums take center stage at Meijer Gardens fall display
Mum’s the word.
At least it will be the word later this week, when “Chrysanthemums and More" opens at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
The annual event, formerly called ColorFall, gets under way Friday and runs through Oct. 30.
Workers spent Thursday and Friday planting 3,000 mums around the 132-acre gardens for the event. Another 1,000 plants are displayed inside.
“Chrysanthemums have always been a significant part of our autumn landscape designs, but this year’s mum displays will be even more spectacular,’’ said Steve LaWarre, director of horticulture at Meijer Gardens. “Outdoors, expansive beds of colorful chrysanthemums will be arranged in large sweeps of vibrant hues of scarlet, burnt orange, purple and gold.’’
Chrysanthemums have long been used in memorial arrangements and will play a significant role in myriad events recognizing today’s 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
