If you’re interested in archeology and the past, Tunisia is an excellent place to visit. The map of Tunisia that I have identifies 29 archeological sites. Twenty-nine sites in a country approximately the size of the state of Missouri means you don’t have to go far to explore and compare different sites. It also means that in maintaining these sites and making them available to the public, Tunisia takes archeology seriously and appreciates the past it reveals to us.
If you don’t have any or much experience with archeological ruins, Tunisia is also a good place to visit and test your interest in the subject. By having many sites easily accessible and open to the public, Tunisia encourages visitors to come and learn about themselves through learning about the past.
Why are there so many archeological sites in Tunisia? Because Tunisia, small in size as it is, has a deep history, including nearly 700 years of Roman activity in Tunisia. When Romans came to a country, they used and honed their excellent engineering skills to build military outposts and fortified them by establishing communities. When the empire faltered, they abandoned the sites. Later settlers sometimes built on what the Romans left behind.
