Crooked Fingers' frontman chides mainstream rock
In theory, indie-rock musicians should ignore popular culture, but, of course, they frequently offer tart replies to the mainstream.
Eric Bachmann, who once fronted the quintessential 1990s indie-rock band Archers of Loaf, admitted as much while talking about "Breaks in the Armor," his latest album under the Crooked Fingers moniker.
"I wanted it to be the opposite of how everything else is right now," he said in an interview before Crooked Fingers' show Saturday at the Cactus Club. "These days, the way things are recorded, there's so much to do to edit and fix it with Pro Tools or whatever. We left the mistakes and did that on purpose."
That might be a reaction, but it's also a change from previous work Bachmann has done as the Crooked Fingers' frontman. Albums such as 2003's "Red Devil Dawn" and 2005's "Dignity and Shame" were elaborately arranged. By contrast, "Breaks in the Armor" eases toward simplicity.
