, Part of the "Brits Off-Broadway" series at 59E59 Theaters , a middle-class neighborhood is battling a crime wave. True, the alleged crimes so far include little more than stealing a pair of hedge clippers and decapitating a garden gnome, but the well-mannered residents of the Bluebell Hill Development are certain that all heck is about to break loose.Having just moved in, soft-spoken Martin and his primly deferential sister Hilda don’t want to wait for the criminals—most likely, they assume, the unsavory types who live in the housing project down the hill—to infiltrate their serene English suburb, so they organize a neighborhood watch. Few people at Bluebell Hill are interested in joining, probably because they don’t see any real threat looming, but this means that the only residents actually coming to meetings are the most paranoid, the bossiest, the most judgmental gossips and scolds. Their fears quickly escalate, as do their responses, and soon enough the self-appointed committee is policing not just the nearby housing project, but Bluebell Hill itself (looking for “the enemy within”). These self-professed Christians and pacifists become grand inquisitors, interrogating their neighbors and locking them up in wooden stocks at the entrance to the development.
