Red tape keeps Clover in limbo
Yes, my cows all have number tags in their ears but most of them also have names. I agonise over their welfare, which brings me to the point of my story.
Recently I had to make a heart-wrenching decision about Clover, who was born and raised on the farm. She was getting older and had been barren for three years and her natural time was up. With another cow for company, she was sent to a slaughterhouse, not far away at Bedford. I felt terrible about turning Clover into burgers (which is almost certainly what an old beast like her becomes). But it had to be done.
It was then that the red-tape peddlers struck. Clover travelled with a certificate issued by that infamous quango, the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS); but the slaughterhouse wanted an additional green form: news to me, but apparently she could not be killed without one. “OK,” I said, “I’ll have her back then.”
“There is a problem,” a helpful man said. “You can’t have her back. According to the BCMS, she has to stay here – foot and mouth regulations. You must get her a new passport.”
