I had two beautiful hanging begonias in baskets this summer. We enjoyed their blooms inside all through November. The foliage is still drying out and falling off (They are in a cool, 40ish room and I am not watering them.) What do I do so that I may again have wonderful blooms in 2012? - Melissa, Racine.
Bringing beautiful plants in from outside is a great way to continue enjoying their color, fragrance and health benefits throughout the cold, dark winter. But it is sometimes difficult to keep those plants growing, blooming and looking good when the days are short and the air is so cool and dry. The adjustment from the great outdoors to the dry interior is really tough on plants, but it can be done if care is taken.
If your begonias are the dragon wing type, which are commonly used in hanging baskets, they can be trimmed back to about 4 to 6 inches and allowed to "maintain" some growth over the winter if the pots are in a bright location.
Water when the soil is dry, fertilize lightly and try to keep the soil more dry than wet to discourage root rot. Place the pots in bright light and you may be rewarded with more blooms as the day length increases.
Loving those Dragon Wing begonias
It is a cross between the well-known angelwing begonia and the more common wax begonia, making this begonia a plant with the best of both varieties.
