Growing Friendship: Potted plants bond assisted-living center roommates

Donna Driskill and Susan Connors found themselves sitting at the new kids' table in the Forest Lake Manor assisted-living center in Daytona Beach.

Over a year's time, they forged a strong friendship and a love for growing plants. Susan, 69, is legally blind and Donna, 62, suffers from early onset of Parkinson's disease; together they have a special patio filled with neatly coiffed container plants.

Donna has a passion for indoor plants. She brought two plants to the friendship, and together, they expanded their collection to nearly 25 plants. As roommates, they help each other in life as well as pursuing their unending mutual interest in anything gardening.

"I read all of the articles from The Plant Lady in The Daytona Beach News-Journal garden section on the computer," Donna says. "I read aloud to Susan and what I don't get answered, I research on my computer."

They make a good team. Susan's passion for roses is clear. She has a half dozen miniature and modern roses in her collection. "My advice to anyone wanting to grow roses is to use a good stock like Nelson's roses" declares Susan. (Nelson's Florida Roses is an Apopka-based nursery.)
