Loving those Dragon Wing begonias

From blogger Judy Aull:

I love Dragon Wing begonias. Who could resist the allure of a plant that has leaves that resemble the wings of angels and is covered with sensational flower-clusters that bloom from spring up until the first frost? Some gardeners jokingly say this is a “begonia on steroids.” I am becoming more and more convinced that this stunning beauty is my favorite flowering plant, filling most of my outdoor containers every summer.

It was introduced in 2000 by The Pan American Seed Company and proceeded to stun the gardening world by its new and unique qualities, being awarded a gold medal in 2005. It is a cross between the well-known angelwing begonia and the more common wax begonia, making this begonia a plant with the best of both varieties. From the angelwing it inherited the characteristic wing-shape leaf and large clusters of bright flowers, and the wax begonia gave it the waxy dark green color of the leaf and a tolerance for heat.

To develop new properties in plants, breeders use a method called interspecific hybridization. Dragon Wing begonia is an example of this process, which causes it to be sterile and keeps it from producing seed. Because of this trait, it blooms consistently in an effort to reproduce.
