Putting a garden to bed for the winter

Getting the garden put to bed for winter can really save some effort next year.

Finishing up any harvesting, cleaning up dead plant material, tidying the mess and disarray, and packing away things you won't need during the winter help prepare everything to be ready for spring.

Cool weather makes these final chores easier to accomplish, and getting them done will save a lot more time next season, when so much needs to be done all at once.

Here's what to do:

Cleanup. To add years to their life, remove and store hoses that won't be used, plant supports, tags and decorations. Harvest any last fruits or vegetables and pull up the dead annuals. Clean out overgrown areas to keep pests from finding shelter over winter. Empty all containers; store the soil if you plan to reuse it next year, but wash and sterilize the pots by rinsing them with a solution of nine parts water to one part chlorine bleach. This is the time to remove caked mud and rusted oxidizations from tools, too.
