Weekend Plantings: 'Wax Begonia'

Although wax begonias are often treated as annuals, they can live and flower for several years. So if you're hoping to keep newly set plants beyond next spring, be sure to install them where they'll be shielded from full, afternoon sun. Propagate with cuttings and divisions.

READY FOR WINTER

It's likely several frosts and maybe a freeze or two will occur this winter. If you haven't yet made plans for dealing with low temperatures, do so now. It's best to inspect your landscape to assess which plants will require protective coverings on frosty nights. If you're unsure about the cold tolerances of some plants, do research now so you don't waste time and energy covering species that don't need protection.

It's important to consider the locations of plants when evaluating their vulnerability to cold. Plants on the south or east sides of buildings, or under large trees, are much less likely than exposed plants to be damaged by frosts and freezes, while containerized plants are considerably more susceptible than in-ground specimens of the same species. If heavy containers might need to be moved to sheltered locations, it's prudent to purchase a dolly or hand truck.
