Triple transplant saves child's life
Escondida resident Gayl Dorr had a Christmas miracle this year, one she’s been holding her breath and praying for, for several years.
Nineteen years ago, Dorr learned that her tiny, blonde, six-month-old granddaughter had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
“It was quite a blow,” she said. “The only children that I knew personally who had cystic fibrosis, from when my children were growing up — their life span at that time was not even into the teens. That, to me, was when the light bulb went off.”
Dorr’s grandchild, Jennifer Golden, is the daughter of her son Bobby Golden, a New Mexico Tech graduate, and his wife Laura Lee Golden.
“Her mother knew something was wrong, and she wouldn’t back off,” Dorr said. “She knew Jenn wasn’t progressing properly.”
Cystic fibrosis varies in severity from person to person, but attacks the lungs and pancreas, creating thick mucus that interferes with breathing and digestion.
