Longtime Florist to the Celebs Still Starts His Workday at 3 a.m.
Even after 18 years in the flower business and acquiring innumerable celebrity customers—Katherine Heigl, Fergie, Josh Duhamel and Pink among them—plus working events such as the Academy Awards Governor’s Ball, the Golden Globes and the Emmys, Mark Held still starts his workday at 3 a.m. several days a week, prowling the downtown Flower Mart.
“I go down to the market and hand pick the flowers,” said Held, co-owner of Mark’s Garden in Sherman Oaks. “I select the colors I like and the variety.
“The thing about the flower business is that it’s not the same thing every day,“ Held said. “You may not get the flowers that you had planned on, but you find something unique and different and that no one else has.”
That focus on creativity has enabled Held and his business partner, Richard David, to occupy a place among Los Angeles’ premier florists. Helping them is a staff of 15 floral designers.
At this time of year, the business is especially busy with Christmas and Hanukkah arrangements, holiday wreaths and garlands offered for sale in the 4,000-square-foot shop on Ventura Boulevard. Held and his team also design, arrange and deliver flowers to numerous high-profile holiday parties and events. Then there’s marksflowers.com, the online shop to deliver Held’s signature creations across the country.
