Trees' late fall color a brilliant finale to 2011

"I frankly think the fall view is more impressive than the psychedelic Disneysque spring view," Grant says. "My favorite time of year is when the sugar maples turn their leaves loose and fall like golden stars among burning embers. It's magical."
Why do leaves change colors? They lose chlorophyll, the predominant pigment that makes them green and nourishes the tree.
Chlorophyll soaks up sunlight, triggering the food-and-energy process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, leaves use light to convert water (absorbed from the ground via roots) and carbon dioxide (from the air) into oxygen and sugar (glucose) for food.
