There's no stopping Joyce Young.
At 81 she's still planning and plotting her town garden, perfecting pottery wood pigeons and pursuing pastels as a medium for her landscape pictures. She's also just had a new pacemaker put in and got her stride back after having a hip replacement in 2008, the same year she moved to town.
"I'm like the Bionic Woman," she says referring to the 1970s TV programme starring Lindsay Wagner. "I wore my hip out and I had to have it replaced and I knew I had to downsize - it comes to us all," she says. That's what brought Joyce to New Plymouth after a life- time of living in the country as a farmer and then a beekeeper, potter, painter and gardener.
She has also opened her gardens for the annual rhododendron festival since its beginning 24 years ago. "I only missed one when I moved," Joyce says.
"I hope I can continue for the 25th year - may I have good health and be able to do it."
It could have been touch and go for this festival just gone, because Joyce learnt that the pacemaker that was put in 10 years ago was near the end of its life.

Walking away those Sunday morning blues I look down; tiny little low-growing purple flowers growing in in the shady spots. I look up; big trees with white flowers framed by a brilliant blue sky. |
