Plants beneath eaves stretch for light

A: Encores perform best with more sun than traditional azaleas. They might flower beneath the eaves, but I don't think they'd be prolific. Many plants might dislike such conditions and would need pruning for a full, even look. However, you might consider some of the lower-growing camellias. They grow slowly, so legginess might not be as much of a problem. They need a fertile, organically enriched soil. Blooms appear in fall, winter or early spring, depending on the cultivar.

I like 'Soft Caress' mahonia as a shade shrub. It produces yellow flowers once a year, but the fine leaves give year-round texture. It tolerates pruning. If possible, plant outside the eave line so shrubs get more even light and the benefit of rain.

For plants beneath the pine: Dianthus offers fall-spring color and perhaps some summer blooms. 'Melody' comes in white and pink; the stems are long and cut well. Osteospermum, or African daisy, might get enough sun to bloom in cool months. German primroses (white, lavender or rose) would be beautiful fall through spring. And you could add white cyclamen. Pigeon berry is another option. The small white and pink flowers are followed by tiny red berries that attract doves.
