Alluring azaleas
LONG LIVED PLANTAround 400BC, some Greek soldiers became ill after consuming honey made from the nectar of a plant that was growing along the Black Sea where the troop was camping. That ancient species was Pontica azalea, Rhododendron luteum. Three hundred years later, the same honey killed a Roman soldier.
During the 18th and 19th Centuries, the English introduced azaleas into western horticultural history and grew native American azaleas that were sent home by colonial plant collectors. Holland and Great Britain imported many Asian varieties via the East India Company.
The genus Rhododendron is a member of the heath or Ericaceae family of plants. Its relatives include the blueberry and cranberry.
Azaleas or Rhododendron spp. are temperate plants that are native to all regions of the world except South America and Africa. Not every rhododendron is an azalea but all azaleas varieties are rhododendrons. There are now over 10,000 different cultivars.
