Now that the growing season is over, it is a good time to take a close look at the condition of our trees and gardens. Problems that develop in the spring, summer and fall often show the results in autumn.
Here are a few examples based on what I have been seeing lately:
Many of the street trees around the city of Napa, especially the red maples and red-silver hybrid maples, showed premature fall color and began shedding leaves early.
Coast live oaks that looked fine all summer suddenly showed large numbers of dead twigs with retained dead leaves.
Broadleaf evergreen shrubs, like several Viburnum species, toyon, azalea, rhododendron, photinia, Portugal laurel, and Pacific wax myrtle developed a bleached look on the leaf surfaces.
The visual signs seem to be sudden but the problems started earlier in the year.
Considering the premature fall color, a look at tree location reveals a lot. Maples, being “mesic” e.g. water-needy trees, show stress, expressed as early coloration and leaf shedding when grown in limited and relatively dry root zones. A little scouting reveals that maples in unirrigated curb strips are closer to full dormancy now, while the same tree species in irrigated lawns and gardens are just now coming into their glory, with full canopies of thick, healthy leaves.
