Plants don't need daily watering during winter
The places that are guiltiest about watering too much seem to be businesses, apartment complexes, and subdivision entrances. I go by an apartment complex every morning coming to work, and every day their sprinklers have been on early that morning.
Making matters worse is the fact that sprinklers are still coming on at 5 and 6 in the morning. When we have freezing temperatures, they are creating hazards for pedestrians and motorists going to work. I remember a few years ago when a church in Augusta was still watering dormant grass early in the morning during the winter and sheriff’s deputies had to block an entire lane because of ice on the road.
The best thing you can do for your system is to install a water sensor. You can get one for about $25, and wire it to your irrigation controller. It keeps your system from coming on if it is raining or has rained a certain amount in the past few days. It will more than pay for itself in just a month or two and your plants will be much healthier.
