Improvise a centerpiece when flowers go moldy
Somewhere in there, I unwrapped the bundle of flowers I'd just bought to use on the dining room table and discovered the stems and leaves were caked with mold. Considered using the flowers themselves till I realized they weren't supposed to be bronze, so I sent Sam and Zoe out with a bucket of water and nippers while I made pies.
Told them to look for anything interesting - shrubs, cultivated plants or weeds - and to concentrate on fall colors with lots of greenery for contrast.
Meanwhile, I found a square container that came with last fall's bouquet. Fortunately the floral foam was still intact, so all we had to do was poke. Sam asked to help with the arranging, so we were in business.
Minutes later, we had a gorgeous bouquet that most anybody could put together for the holidays just by switching to assorted greenery (check out all your shrubs), ivy, grasses (monkey grass counts), berries, twigs and a few real flowers. Or none.
OK, fake if you feel the urge. Even fake holly, but only if it looks real enough to touch.

In praise of poukhanense azalea
For me, one is the color of its blooms. The pinkish-purple is a pretty color by itself but it doesn't fit in well with the rest of the spring garden.
