Dear Neil: How and when are German thyme and Greek oregano propagated?
A: Thyme is often grown from seed sown on the surface of potting soil in 4-inch pots, as many as 20 seeds per pot in the warm days of spring. It can also be rooted from cuttings taken later in spring or summer. Greek oregano is grown by spring divisions or summer cuttings.
Dear Neil: We have several old rose bushes that were not pruned by the former owner for the past four or five years. They're very tall and full of dead wood. This is our first winter to be taking care of them. When and how should we prune them?
A: Bush roses are pruned in mid-February. Generally we try to cut them back by 50 percent, which could still apply to your plants. Selected canes, however, will probably need to be pruned back more heavily. Always make your cuts just above buds that face out from the centers of your plants. That way you'll continue to encourage lower, more open branching that will allow better air flow to the foliage, hence lessen the problem of blackspot. Remove all dead canes. With that much time elapsed, there are bound to be many.
