Before heading up to Monticello, many visitors stop to eat at The Ordinary, an add-on to Michie Tavern, located on the curvy drive up to the house. Built circa 1784, the tavern was originally located about 17 miles away from where it now rests and was deconstructed, moved and rebuilt. All of this takes away some of the experience, as does the cafeteria-style dining (self-serving, trays moved across the room as on a conveyor belt). However, the “midday fare,” happens to be inspired: hickory-smoked barbequed pork, stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, green beans and mashed potatoes, served on stainless steel plates, representing the pewter used by those who would have dined in Jefferson’s day.
The gravel path circling Jefferson’s home is lined with remains of structures, some only slabs now. Along the path atop the front lawn, there’s a capital-G garden, a flower enthusiast’s Eden: Great Blue Lobelia, Tree Malloy, blackberry lily, phlox, cockscomb, snapdragon, Mad Dog Plant, geranium, pink-spiked celosia, strawflowers, Love-Lies Bleeding, balsam apple, marigold, Prince’s Feather, China aster, Joseph’s Coot, and then some. Plus a fish pond, vineyards, an orchard, and the vegetable garden, where Jefferson planted 330 varieties of more than 70 types of vegetables.
