Checklist: Changes are coming in the lighting industry

HOME CHECKLIST

More consumers are aware that major changes are coming in the lighting industry, but they're not all willing to switch to energy-efficient bulbs, according to a new survey.

Starting Jan. 1, the familiar 100-watt incandescent bulb will no longer be manufactured in the United States as part of a federally mandated phase-out.

Commissioned by bulb maker Osram Sylvania, the fourth annual Sylvania Socket Survey showed that only 31 percent of Americans knew specifically about that New Year's Day deadline.

Overall, knowledge about the phase-out is growing, with 55 percent of those surveyed aware of 2007 congressional legislation that will phase out most standard incandescent light bulbs. That's up 19 percent from last year's survey and up 29 percent from 2009.

In other findings:

• Almost three-quarters of respondents said it is important to them that their bulbs are "made in America."

• While 56 percent said they're eager to use more energy-efficient options such as halogens, CFLs or LEDs, one-third admitted they're worried about the change.
