Yellow Anemone

Scott feeds the anemone a small crab. I wonder if it even eats crab.

Post Farmers' Market, In Search of Pumpkin-Cranberry Perfection

The taste I took away from this week’s farmers’ market visit was the slice of Suncrisp, handed to me off the knife of a worker at one of the farm stands.

A large, yellow apple, the Suncrisp is juicy, with a bright sweetness but a tart finish, and the kind of crispness one’s front teeth keep a memory of. The worker, who’d written the name of several apple varieties at the top of paper plates and was slicing the apples for shoppers to sample — explained that it’s a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Cox Orange Pippen. Which immediately made me think of the excellent John Seabrook piece on apple breeding in the recent Food Issue of The New Yorker .

They also have a light candy scent — a thing I only now recall, picturing us standing there with our slices and the baby pressing hers to her nose, inhaling dramatically several times before inserting her little white teeth into the wedge.

The images that have stayed with me, though, are of the piles of still-damp, almond-shaped fennel; crowd-stopping purple kolhrabi; small, tender heads of broccoli; mountains of curly kale; bins of Chinese greens tamed and sorted with rubber bands; and veritable ramparts of yellow and red onions, their ends sticking out toward us like twee pompoms, or sea anemone.
