November gardening is not exactly glamorous. So often it is wet, cold and a slow progress through top-heavy borders which need cutting down. It was with mixed feelings recently that I listened to a Friday night of heavy rain and pictured a British weekend spent in a stormy test of will. In fact it confounded expectations and gave me, as I hope it gave you, one of the best weekends for months.
Never judge the prospects of a British weekend by the weather at Friday midnight. Saturday broke to a clear, warm morning, so I decided to begin by checking what is in full flower in this mild mid-November. Many of the late stayers were still at their best and if they are not yet in your garden I recommend them for the extra weeks that they give. One of the best is the pale pink flowered Hebe Nicola’s Blush, which even proved hardy with me in the recent severe winter. It is an excellent small shrub, about 2ft high, evergreen and covered in short spikes of pink white flowers until the frost becomes serious. I have it mixed in with red Schizostylis, the Kaffir Lilies which are also reliable in most winters. They have had an excellent November, holding their long lasting red flowers on stems about a foot and a half high and lasting well even in intermittent rain. I do not find that they insist on damp soil as the handbooks tend to say. Mine flower well even in poor soil after dry summers so long as I give them some diluted fertiliser in late summer for a fortnight or two. For too long I classed them as plants for wet gardens only. They will grow almost anywhere, the scarlet flowered forms being the best.
