'Little Mermaid' at DeSales sweet, funny and visually charming
Attended by a lots of little girls in mermaid outfits, the final project of the senior theater class of the Performing and Fine Arts Department, is a sweet and frothy confection. Many performances are sold out.The musical tells the story of Anemone, the youngest of six mermaid daughters of King Neptune, who gets to visit the surface for her 15th birthday and falls in love with a prince. The story is different from the Walt Disney version, although there are similarities.
The underwater motif is charmingly evoked with a selection of creative sea creatures, from a trio of jellyfish hoisting clear umbrellas trailing iridescent streamers to Clem Clam, the good-hearted but goofy sidekick to the title character, played by Samantha Katorkas.
Bubbles, mermaids with sparkly face jewels and pastel-colored chiffon flounced ''tails'' and a simple but effective set transform the intimate Schubert Theater into a deep sea paradise.
