Amaryllis an ideal last-minute gift

You deserve a gift, too. An amaryllis is an ideal treat. Or grab one as a last-minute present for a gardener. It's not too late to force an elegant bulb for winter blooms, then plant it in the garden, where it will naturalize and bring years of spring flowers.

Garden centers may sell pre-potted or bare bulbs. Take a pre-potted one home and watch it grow. Otherwise, choose large, firm, bruise-free loose bulbs with fleshy roots, and store them in a cool place (45 to 50 degrees) until you're ready to plant. Pot the bulbs six to eight weeks before you want blooms.

To delay sprouting and/or blooming for late spring occasions such as Mother's Day, store bulbs in the refrigerator: Remove dried roots but leave fleshy roots. Dust each bulb with baby powder to discourage moisture buildup and fungal problems. Wrap them individually in two layers of paper towels, then two layers of newspaper, secured with a rubber band. You also can then place a bulb in a paper sack, and store it upright. Do not store bulbs with fruit or you'll abort the bloom scapes.
