Best time to plant Amaryllis
Barbara, Monterey: I have one amaryllis outside in a pot and two inside in pots. None have bloomed this year.When can I plant them in the ground in Monterey, what kind of sun exposure do they need and when will they bloom in this area? Also, how much water and fertilizer so they need?

A: Amaryllis is a wonderful flower. That's the one you see being sold during the holidays that is typically grown indoors as a festive accent, and it is incredibly striking, with large trumpet-like blooms on tall stalks, often in red, but also in white, pink and variegated varieties.
So the question becomes, what do you do with amaryllis when the blooms are spent? You don't have to throw the bulbs away. You can either save them for an indoor display next year, or plant them in your garden, if you are blessed to live in a mild winter climate like the folks in Monterey County.
Amaryllis hippeastrum is native to South America and does prefer slightly warmer
