Festive plants can brighten your home for the holidays

One of the best things about this time of year is the color. Even though the sky often is cloudy and the darkness seems to settle shortly after 4 p.m., you can count on the bright spots of red, green, blue and white in the trees, on porches, lighting up rooftops, Santa’s sleigh and Rudolph’s nose.

Red seems to be the color of choice in December, however. Amaryllis, holly, poinsettias and mistletoe are great favorites for holiday cheer and decorations.

Amaryllis has become popular because of its large flowers and the fact it is an easy plant to bring to bloom inside. I think children like them, especially, because they can almost see them growing every day.

Put them in a sunny window — they are tropical and originated in South America — and within a few weeks, the large stem grows about 3 feet and then blooms with two or three huge blossoms. Red is the brightest, but they come in pink, orange, white, salmon and striped and multi-colored. You can save the bulb and bring it to bloom again after a bit of winter rest.
