Amaryllis brings beauty to any home
One of the stars of the indoor garden is the magnificent amaryllis, the bulbs of which are on sale now at nurseries around the province. I’ve picked up amaryllis from Blomidon in Wolfville, Den Haan’s near Middleton and Halifax Seed in the past couple of weeks, and I know that Bloom in Hammonds Plains is also carrying them.
You can find lower-quality bulbs at department stores, but you won’t get the quality or the variety of cultivars you’ll find at nurseries.
Choose bulbs that are firm, with no soft or spongy areas, and no signs of dehydration. Trim off the dry, withered rootlets, and soak each bulb in tepid water for an hour before planting in fresh potting mixture.
You’ll need a deep, heavy pot that will support the bulb and help balance the flowering stems (sometimes you’ll have to stake your stems otherwise). Fill the container with potting mixture just to the spot on the bulb where it narrows in towards the neck — leave the rest showing.
