The art of the centerpiece

Call your florist a week ahead of your first dinner party. Give table measurements and the color and style of your dining room and table settings, advises Carlos Colon of Columbine Custom Floral Design in South Boston. A “long and low” arrangement (the example below is from Cedar Grove Gardens in Dorchester) is short enough that guests can see over it, and typically runs down a third of the length of the table. But, says Bill Mizuta of Boston’s Wm. Mizuta Private Florist, you can make a smaller arrangement look bigger by “using colors that pop, like vibrant reds and lime greens,” or by adding candles or ribbons.

If you need table space for passing platters, dot the table with three to five small vases (above, an example from Lotus Designs in Boston). The flowers can be tall without obstructing views because the arrangements are skinny. Add candles of any height to the table to make less look like more, suggests Victoria Samuel of Winston Flowers, in Boston and elsewhere.
