How-to Plant an Amaryllis Bulb

How-to plant an amaryllis bulb

Enjoy gardening indoors and out this month

December's a good time to garden indoors and out.

Snip holly with berries plus boxwood, cedar, pine, juniper and magnolia leaves for holiday decorations.

Force amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs to enjoy indoors.

Keep indoor poinsettias in bright light and cool temperatures.

Check the water in the Christmas tree stand. Don't allow it to drop below the trunk.

Chickweed and oxalis are making a cool-season comeback. Weed and mulch.

Rake and collect fallen leaves and pine needles; spread them as mulch or add them to the compost.

Check hollies, euonymus and camellias for scale. Treat with dormant oil.

Be prepared to bring tender potted plants indoors.

Water well before a freeze. Cover delicate plants with row cover or large nursery pots.

Plant trees and shrubs.

Move azaleas and camellias if necessary.

Plant cool-season annuals in beds and containers.

Sow larkspur and Drummond phlox.

Plant pre-chilled tulips mid-December to mid-January.
