Garden Tip: Enjoy indoor bulbs this winter

Invite nature indoors this winter with paperwhites and amaryllis. These bulbs can be forced in trays or pots of pebbles and water. However, if you plan to keep your amaryllis from year to year, place it in soil so that it has plenty of nutrients.

Paperwhites will blossom in about four to five weeks once started. They are extremely fragrant and can fill a room with scent.

Consider starting batches of the bulbs every week or two for continual flowers. Paperwhites do best in bright indirect light and will bloom longer in a cool room.

Make sure that water is always touching the bottom of the bulbs. After blooms and foliage have faded, compost the bulbs as they will not re-bloom.

Amaryllis produce huge colorful blooms in about six to eight weeks once planted.

If planting in soil, allow for a 2-inch space between the bulb and the edge of the pot so there is plenty of room for roots. Place the bulb so that the neck and half the bulb are above the surface of the soil. Press the soil firmly around the bulb and water thoroughly. Place the container in a warm sunny location. Keep the soil only slightly moist until the bulb starts to grow, then the plants should be kept evenly moist, but not wet.
