The art of giving a hostess gift
Give cut flowers, because then she'll have to get a vase and take time out from her guests.
Bring frozen goods or something that needs to be kept chilled.
Expect she's going to use or serve whatever you bring. If you bring wine, she may already have planned the wine for the dinner. Don't bring a covered dish unless it's a potluck. And don't expect her to use your gift of holiday napkins; she probably already has some out.
Go overboard on price. It's not a competition. If you make jams or jellies or herbal olive oils, grab one and put a ribbon on it. You don't have to wrap it. If you are going to a fairly big party with a lot of people, include a little card with your name on it so they know who brought it.
Think you have to bring something. Bringing a hostess gift to a party isn't a requirement.
Do:
Bring something if you are going to a person's house for the first time. But you don't have to do it every time you go to someone's house.
